Since your stairway is quite often at the entrance to your home, you’ll want to make sure that it looks its best – and stays looking that way. The stairs are a busy footfall area in any home, so it’s important that your selection of flooring will stand the test of time. Here’s some inspiration and tips for choosing a stair carpet that’s both practical and stylish.

Fully fitted or stair runner?

Whether you opt for a fully fitted stair carpet or a runner is really down to personal choice. You may prefer to create a more streamlined feel to your home by continuing your hallway and landing carpet across the full width of your stairs, or you might feel that a runner will add more interest.

There are some beautiful runners available from Roger Oates Design. Their range of 100% wool flat weave rugs and runners are all woven and hand-finished in the UK using traditional techniques – choose from bold striped borders in a herringbone texture to detailed stripes-within-stripes or wide bands of colour.

We also love the range of patterned carpets available from Alternative Flooring, which make a great focal point when fitted on the stairway. The Margo Selby Quirky B collection is our personal favourite, with its range of bold patterns and vibrant colours.

Alternatively, you may want to consider a coir or sisal carpet if you’re after a more natural, understated look.  Naturally robust, fibres like these are perfect for the stairway, halls and landing and will create a beautiful streamlined look throughout your home. These come in a range of various designs – opt for herringbone for something a little different. We particularly love this look in cottages or more traditional interiors.

Loop pile carpets are also a great option for the stairway. Made from 100% wool, they’re a hardwearing, practical choice as a stair carpet. Go for chunkier loops for a more modern finish, or keep it simple with linear, tightly woven loops. Stripes are always popular for stairways and there’s no shortage of designs available. Whether you’re after something more neutral, or you’re keen to add some colour we have a huge range available in our Worcester flooring store.

If you do want a continuation of your hallway carpet, but you prefer the look of a runner, most carpets can be whipped at the edges. We work with specialists and can arrange for this service to be done for you. This is also a popular option if you want to create a bespoke rug from a carpet design of your choice.
